C & J Cocker's
Q & A

This is one of our Magnificent Black Cocker Spaniels "Benji" and His Owner.

A little known fact about "Black Cocker Spaniels" is:

Of all the breeds who compete in Dog Shows

A Black Cocker Spaniel has won Best in Show more times than any other breed

It's really no surprise to us.

You have lots of puppies posted, are they all yours?

We have been working our line of American Cocker Spaniels since 1991.  We have not made them available to the public until recently. Our focus on health and diet has made them very unique, especially in the baby department.  Although it has never been our goal to increase litter size, as we improved on the overall health of our puppies through our selective breeding program, we have noticed the size of the litters have continued to increase.  In comparison, a normal litter for an unimproved, line-bred Female American Cocker Spaniel is 4 to 6 puppies and only 80% of those survive.  Our average litter size ranges from 9 to 12 healthy, strong, viable puppies, with no runts or faders.  We never have more babies that we can properly manage, socialize and care for properly.

In addition, we are pleased to report that not only are the parents ours and on the property, in most cases the Grand Parents, Great-Grand Parents, and Great-Great-Grand Parents are right here as well.

To whom do you sell your puppies?

We only sell our American Cocker Spaniel puppies to responsible individuals. We have never and are not planning to ever sell our puppies to a pet store or broker.

Are your puppies micro chipped?

Yes, all of our puppies come with a microchip.  We are one of the few breeders in the United States that makes sure that all of our puppies receive a microchip.  The chip is registered in the owner's name, phone number, etc. and with C & J Cocker's as the breeder.

Why do you microchip all of your puppies?

Should the puppy be lost or stolen and recovered by a Veterinarian, Humane Society, SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), they will try to contact the registered owner and if not successful they will call C & J Cocker's.  If we are not able to reach the owners, we will call on one of our C & J Owners in the area to recover the puppy.  If they are not available, we will send one of our Cocker Rescue people to recover the pup.  As a last resort, we will have the puppy flown to C & J Cocker's until we can find the owners. We will not allow a C & J Cocker's Puppy to be euthanized or adopted out of a shelter.

How often to I bath or groom my Cocker Spaniel

Your puppy is going to be full of energy and will want to play and run and roll in the dirt and grass and other things of interest. Sometimes those "other" things may cause you some concern as he may not smell very pleasant afterwards. Of course, then it is bath time. So the answer to how often do I bath my puppy is: "when he/she is dirty". Many puppies live in a very nice environment where they will not become soiled simply because they will not have the opportunity to get into to many things to become really dirty. Care should be taken so that you do not bath him too much. Frequent bathing will make his/her skin dry and itchy... not a pleasant consequence for anyone. Some owners have actually caused great harm to their puppy in their pursuit of cleanliness. We suggest bathing as a twice a month affair and on average over all once a month for your Cocker.

Grooming will depend on how you choose to keep the coat.  Longer coats can require daily bushing, while shorter coats can be a little less work.
